Less changes with age than people expect, and what does change is mostly recovery rather than capacity. Here is what to adjust and what to leave alone.

Muscle and strength are trainable well into old age. That is the headline, and it is better established than most things in fitness.
What changes with age is recovery, not capacity. A fifty year old builds muscle through the same mechanism a twenty five year old does. They simply need more time between hard sessions and are less forgiving of poor sleep.

Why it matters more, not less
Muscle mass declines with age from around the fourth decade if nothing is done about it, and that decline is associated with loss of independence, falls and fractures later in life.
Resistance training is the intervention with the strongest evidence for slowing it. It also builds bone mineral density, which matters particularly around and after menopause.
Of all the reasons to lift, this is the one that outlasts every aesthetic goal.

The rep range shift is not because heavy work stops working. It is that moderate loads produce a similar growth stimulus with less joint stress, so the risk-adjusted return is better.
Protein
Older adults appear to need more protein per meal to trigger the same muscle building response, a phenomenon usually called anabolic resistance.
