Barbell Overhead Press

shouldersbarbell
Where the shoulders muscles sit, front and back.

Anatomical figures from body-muscles by Ivan Vulović, Apache-2.0.

Primary muscle

shoulders

Equipment

barbell

Secondary muscles

arms, core

How to perform

Set the bar at collarbone height with your hands just outside shoulder width. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes to stop the lower back arching. Press the bar overhead, moving your head slightly back to let it pass, then bring it forward again at the top. Finish with the bar directly over your mid foot and your biceps beside your ears. Lower under control to the front of your shoulders. Common mistakes: leaning back excessively to turn it into an incline press, and pressing the bar around the head instead of past it.
