Sleep is the single highest-leverage recovery tool available, and the one most people trade away first. Here is what it costs you.

Overview

Training creates the signal to adapt. Sleep is when a large share of that adaptation actually happens.

It is also the variable people cut first when life gets busy, because unlike a missed session it does not feel like skipping training. The effects show up anyway, in flatter sessions, worse decisions about food, and slower progress.

Naps

A 20 to 30 minute nap improves alertness without much grogginess. Longer naps risk entering deep sleep, which produces that heavy, disoriented feeling on waking.

Naps partially offset a short night, but they do not fully replace it. Keep them before mid-afternoon so night sleep is unaffected.
