How Muscle Growth Works

Muscle grows when you give it a mechanical reason to and the raw materials to do it with. Almost everything else you have read is a detail on top of those two things.

Overview

Muscle growth, or hypertrophy, is your body's response to being repeatedly asked to produce force it is not comfortable producing.

Training creates the signal. Food and sleep supply the materials and the time. Take away either half and nothing happens: you cannot build tissue out of enthusiasm, and you cannot build it without a reason.

Muscle grows when resistance training creates mechanical tension in the muscle fibres, triggering a repair and remodelling response. That response requires adequate protein, enough total energy, and sufficient recovery. Growth happens over months, not weeks.

What creates the signal

The main driver is mechanical tension: muscle fibres producing high force across a meaningful range of motion. Sets taken reasonably close to failure produce it reliably, whether the weight is heavy and the reps low or the weight moderate and the reps higher.

You can build muscle in a calorie deficit, particularly as a beginner or if you carry more body fat, but it is slower and harder than doing it at maintenance or in a small surplus.

How fast it happens

Realistic rates, assuming training and nutrition are both in order:

Those are averages, and they are lower than most people expect. Anyone promising you 5kg of muscle in eight weeks is selling something.

Why the scale misleads you

Early weight changes are mostly water, glycogen and gut contents. Muscle glycogen alone can shift scale weight by a kilo or two within days of changing your carbohydrate intake.

Judge muscle gain over months, using the mirror, tape measurements and strength trends rather than daily weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to lift heavy to build muscle?

Not especially. Sets between roughly 5 and 30 reps build muscle well when taken close enough to failure. Heavy loads build strength faster, but growth is more forgiving of rep range than people assume.

Can I build muscle and lose fat at the same time?

Yes, in specific circumstances: beginners, people returning after a break, and people with higher body fat. For a trained lifter at a low body fat percentage it is very slow.

Does soreness mean the workout worked?

No. Soreness tells you a session was unfamiliar. Experienced lifters often grow well while rarely being sore.

How much protein do I actually need?

Around 1.6 to 2.2g per kilogram of bodyweight per day covers essentially everyone. More than that has not been shown to help further.
