What it does not reliably do is prevent injuries or reduce muscle soreness, despite being recommended for both for decades.

The most likely mechanism for flexibility gains is increased tolerance to the stretch sensation, not a physical lengthening of tissue. That does not make the gains less real or less useful.
Where mobility work is genuinely worth it
- -Ankles. Limited ankle dorsiflexion is one of the most common squat limitations.
- -Hips. Affects squat depth and hinge mechanics.
- -Thoracic spine. Limits overhead pressing and comfortable front rack positions.
- -Shoulders. Overhead range affects pressing and pull up mechanics.
If a specific position in your training is limited, targeted work on that position is worthwhile. Generic full body stretching for its own sake is far less valuable than most people assume.
