Foam Rolling

Foam rolling temporarily improves range of motion and feels good. It does not break up adhesions, release fascia, or change tissue structure.

Overview

Foam rolling produces a short term increase in range of motion and a reduction in perceived soreness. Both effects are real and both are temporary.

The explanations attached to it, breaking up scar tissue, releasing fascia, smoothing out adhesions, are not supported. Fascia is far too strong to be meaningfully deformed by bodyweight pressure through a foam cylinder.

The most useful practical property is the last one on the good evidence list: it improves range of motion without the temporary strength reduction that static stretching causes. That makes it a better warm up tool than static stretching.

Areas worth rolling for most lifters: quads, glutes, upper back, calves, lats. Rolling the lower back directly is generally not recommended, as the lumbar spine lacks the protection the thoracic spine has from the rib cage.

They are complementary rather than competing. Roll before training, stretch after, if you want both.

Where it does not help

If a joint is limited by bone structure, rolling will not change it. If a muscle feels tight because it is weak and working hard to stabilise, rolling gives temporary relief while the underlying issue remains.

Persistent tightness in the same place, session after session, is usually a strength or motor control problem rather than a tissue quality one.
